Physicians and Advance Practice Nurses specially trained in interventional pain management provide outpatient treatment to relieve chronic pain, restore function, and decrease or eliminate the need for prescription pain medications. Chronic pain is ongoing pain lasting beyond the normal healing time for an injury or illness, which adversely affects well-being and quality of life.

Patients are accepted by referral from their primary care or specialty physician. Because chronic pain is often associated with underlying medical conditions, our program is specifically designed to integrate and coordinate pain management with any other ongoing treatment. The Pain Management Clinic communicates with primary care and/or referring physicians the progress and outcome of pain management treatment for all patients referred for care.

Insurance coverage for pain management procedures may vary between medical plans. Patients should consult their insurance carrier to verify eligibility or ask the Clinic staff for assistance with insurance verification before scheduling appointments and/or procedures. The WRMC Pain Management Clinic offers appointments at satellite locations within the WRHS clinic network.  All appointments are scheduled through our Batesville location.  Please ask the receptionist about satellite locations when making your appointment.

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. This type of care is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of serious illness - whatever the diagnosis. The palliative care team works with the patient's physician to provide an extra layer of support. This may include discussions with the patient and family to develop a plan of care that reflects mutually agreed upon goal for treatment, comfort, including managing symptoms and controlling pain.

Palliative care benefits patients and families dealing with the demands of serious illnesses such as but not limited to cancer, chronic heart and lung disease, dementia, stroke, or frailty associated with aging. Palliative care is appropriate at any age and any stage of a serious illness. Early palliative care intervention can help prepare patients and families for the future by discussing advance care planning. Hospice is a special type of palliative care when life expectancy is less than six months and may be a part of a patient's treatment plan.

Palliative care may be initiated during hospitalization. The WRMC palliative care team can arrange referrals to agencies to continue palliative care services after discharge from the hospital. For more information contact Amber Calendar, APRN, Palliative Care Coordinator at 870-262-2159.

Radiology Services

White River Medical Center is proud to offer advanced radiologic services for men, women, and children of all ages. Whether screening for early detection or diagnosing a current condition, our radiologists and technologists offer innovative medical imaging techniques as well as traditional services such as x-ray and ultrasound.

Diagnostic Radiology

  • 128-Slice CT— CT (Computed Tomography) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that produces 64 cross section images per rotation when scanning blood vessels, bones, organs, and soft tissues. Images may be taken using contrast, a special dye injected into a vein to highlight areas of the body being examined.
  • CT Angiography (CTA) — Used to diagnose and/or monitor blood vessel disease, aneurysms, blockages, or similar conditions.
  • Calcium Scoring CT —  Scan of the coronary arteries for blockage or narrowing due to calcified plaque buildup, thus evaluating the risk for heart attack.
  • Low-Dose Lung CT — Detects abnormalities in the chest using less ionizing radiation than a conventional CT scan.
  • PET CT Scan — A nuclear medicine exam that identifies changes on a cellular level—before they are visible on other imaging tests—using radiotracers and special equipment to evaluate organs and/or soft tissues; mobile unit available weekly.
  • Large Bore MRI Magnetic Resonance Imaging – Often used for evaluating injuries, tumors, and degenerative disorders of the bones, joints, and surrounding soft tissues by employing magnetic energy and radio waves to produce detailed images of internal body structures. High-field, large-bore scanners provide a more comfortable experience for patients of all sizes due to the extra-large bore architecture. MRI does not require ionized radiation. Patients with MRI safe cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators can safely and comfortably be scanned by the MRI used at WRMC.
  • 3D Mammography — Early detection of breast cancer using low-dose x-rays.
  • Stereotactic Breast Biopsy — A procedure that uses mammography to locate and biopsy an abnormality of the breast.  Stereotactic breast biopsy is less invasive than surgical biopsy, with little to no scarring.
  • Bone Density — A painless, non-invasive test to measure bone mass and the most accurate way to diagnose osteoporosis.

Studies have shown that, as a general rule, adults need eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. A lack of restful sleep may cause irritability, forgetfulness, and difficulty staying awake at work or school. Not getting enough rest also increases your risk for many illnesses.

A sleep study is a clinical test used by physicians to identify conditions that may be preventing you from receiving a good night’s rest. During your sleep study, a technician carefully monitors and records sleep patterns. Your study is evaluated by a physician specializing in Sleep Medicine. A report is sent to your family doctor outlining treatment recommendations.

Common Sleep Disorders

  • Circadian Rhythm Disorder
  • Insomnia
  • Narcolepsy
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Sleep Apnea

Treatment for Sleep Disorders

  • CPAP - Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.  Your physician will first order a sleep study to determine if a CPAP therapy is right for you.  If needed your physician will prescribe a CPAP device for you.  White River Health's Respiratory therapists and CPAP suppliers can help you find the right mask and ensure a proper fit. The machine uses a hose connected to a mask to deliver constant air pressure to help  you breath while you sleep.
  • Some patients are not able to tolerate a CPAP mask.  InspireTM Therapy uses a small device implanted under skin to treat sleep apnea.  Mild stimulation opens the airway during sleep, working with the natural breathing process to keep oxygen flowing naturally. Patients using a small handheld remote to turn Inspire on at bedtime and off in the morning when they wake up.
