White River Medical Center's (WRMC) Childbirth Education program is a free service to families delivering at WRMC. Childbirth education provides accurate and up-to-date information about labor, delivery, and post-pardum care empowering women to make informed decisions about their healthcare. Childbirth education gives mothers and their partners the information and tools for a positive birth experience.
We help your family prepare for baby by teaching about the essentials of labor and delivery using video, demonstrations, and open discussion. Topics include how to recognize when labor begins, when to go to the hospital, managing pain during labor, routine and special procedures, vaginal and cesarean delivery, and safety for mother and baby.
You learn techniques for feeding, bathing, diapering, safety, and basic care of the newborn. We discuss how to recognize signs of illness and when to call the Pediatrician. Techniques are taught through video, demonstrations, and open discussion. If you have purchased your car seat, bring it for techniques on ensuring your baby's comfort and safety.
Breast milk provides the ideal nutrition for infants. It has a nearly perfect mix of vitamins, protein, and fat – everything your baby needs to grow; and breast milk also contains antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria – something that infant formula can't do!! Making the decision to breastfeed is a personal decision. We want to help you get started on the right track, and we are here to help ensure successful breastfeeding. Our nurses are trained to educate and assist with breastfeeding. Certified lactation counselors available if you need extra assistance or have questions after you leave the hospital.
